President Trump has expressed frustration with the slow progress of ending the Ukraine war.
Special Envoy Steve Witkoff met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersberg on Friday, engaging in what the White House called “direct communication with the Kremlin” to end its attack on Ukraine. Despite being the Special Envoy to the Middle East, Witkoff has repeatedly been called on to lead U.S. communications in Ukraine-Russia negotiations. This was Envoy Witkoff’s third meeting with President Putin.
The four hour meeting came after President Donald Trump again called for an end to the three-year-long conflict.
“Too many people ere [sic] DYING, thousands a week, in a terrible and senseless war,” President Trump posted, adding that Russia “has to get moving.”
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reiterated these sentiments at a press briefing that same day. “I think the president has been quite clear that he’s been continuously frustrated with both sides of this conflict, and he wants to see the fighting end,” she said.
